Lentils are mostly used as a food. They may be boiled to make the Indian dhal and lentil soup, or deep-fried and consumed as a snack, or combined with cereal flours to produce breads and cakes. They may be consumed whole, decorticated (dehulled), as splits (dehulled and split into the two cotyledons), or ground into flour (either whole seed or cotyledons). They are also known as: Lentille, lense, lenteige, adas, masoor, mercimek and saabat.
